Isaiah has had an amazing two months of progress lately, but there are still times when I get a little mopey about where he is at. These times typically occur around birthdays and holidays. I said to Tony this morning, "I'm bummed that it's another Halloween and he can't say 'trick or treat' or understand what is going on still." Isaiah's motor skills took a hit for a couple days after the spinal tap and it did cause us to remember how unsteady he used to be and how much we take his progress for granted once we get used to it.
Tonight Isaiah proved that he can still have a great time even if he doesn't fully get the concept of the holiday. Micah found a bacon costume at a garage sale so we dressed Isaiah up as an egg. Easiest costume ever! We couldn't convince Elise to be toast as she was sold on being a witch with lots of green face makeup.
We headed over to a nearby neighborhood where friends live. There are sidewalks everywhere in that neighborhood which meant that Micah could go trick or treating by himself with some friends and Isaiah could walk from house to house for awhile too. It was a weird moment letting my oldest child go off by himself for the first time and watching my youngest child walk up and sign "thank you" when he was given candy. Everyone is growing up.
Isaiah did great walking up to people and signing thank you, but he was being obstinate about leaving each new place. It finally dawned on us that it didn't make any sense to him why we would leave when these nice people were giving us candy and they clearly had more candy available. He became a little less resistant as he realized that there were lots of nice people giving out candy. He loved the fairy wings that one of our friends wore tonight. I think I need to get a pair to wear around the house whenever he is grumpy or doesn't feel well.
Elise had a great time planning her costume this year. I just now realized that we left her witch's broom at home, but she had several wardrobe malfunctions so it might have been better that we didn't have one more thing to work with. Just so you know, $5 wigs from WalMart aren't even worth $5.
Micah had to explain to everyone that he was bacon. Since he took off without us, his egg companion was not nearby to help demonstrate his costume. Several people thought he was Moses. Our funniest story of the night might only be funny if you know Micah's mathematical brain, but here goes. One of Elise's friends, Keeley, said that she got 144 pieces of candy tonight. Micah immediately said "That's a gross." Keeley said, "What do you mean that's gross?" Micah said, "No, that's a gross." Keeley's response was "What's agross?" Sometimes the way his mind interacts with numbers makes me laugh.
I also saw a very cute interaction between Isaiah and Freddy Krueger. Isaiah is obsessed with hats these days and points to his head and tries to say "hat" whenever he sees someone wearing one. If you are familiar with Freddy Krueger of Nightmare on Elm Street fame, he wears a knitted hat, along with long scary metal fingers and a bloody, nasty face. Isaiah looked past the scary face and nails and said "hat" to the pre-teen Freddy Krueger. Pre-teen Freddy said in the sweetest voice, "You're right, buddy. It is a hat. Are you having fun tonight?"
